Some Impressive Women-Owned Inns
excerpts by Andrew Collins ©2009

Ice Palace Inn B&B, Leadville, Colorado
High in the Rocky Mountains, the old mining town of Leadville is situated at about 10,000 feet elevation, meaning it enjoys cool and crisp-aired summers and snowy winters. Here you'll find this dramatic "painted lady" Victorian mansion, built in 1899 and stunningly restored in 1994. The five rooms are decked in over-the-top antiques and comfy feather beds with handmade quilts. The most popular room is set inside the house's distinctive turret, its tall windows affording panoramic mountain views; it also has a deep hydro-massage tub for two. Leadville is just a 45-minute drive from the ski towns of Vail and Breckenridge, and in summer, you can take the scenic mountain road over Independence Pass to Aspen, 60 miles away.
Morris Farmhouse, Coupeville, Washington
Set on Washington's famously beautiful Whidbey Island, which is within striking distance of sophisticated Seattle and rugged Olympic National Park, this inviting inn occupies a 1908 colonial-style farmhouse set on 10 densely wooded acres. The six-room inn is acclaimed for its fragrant gardens, which you can enjoy while relaxing on one of several patio decks. The inn is welcoming of kids (there's a family suite that's perfect for young ones) and pets, but it's also a romantic retreat perfect for getting away from it all. There's excellent hiking nearby, and the town of Coupeville, just 2.5 miles south, has numerous art galleries, shops, and cafes, plus a popular Sunday farmers market.
Mt. Peale Resort, Old La Sal, Utah
Nestled in the La Sal Mountains just 25 miles south of Moab and its spectacular Arches and Canyonlands national parks, the Mt. Peale Resort and Country Inn is run by two women who know a tremendous amount about the region and how best to explore it - plus, they're happy to help organize tours of the many nearby parks and intriguing towns. And there's a hot tub here in which you can rest your muscles after a day of biking, climbing, or river-rafting. The warmly furnished rooms are in a log house at the base of the mountains, and there are also modern cabins that sleep up to six guests. Staying here is a perfect way to experience the magnificent scenery of southern Utah, but with plenty of seclusion and privacy.

Pond Mountain Lodge, Eureka Springs, Arkansas
High in the Ozark Mountains of northwest Arkansas, the artsy village of Eureka Springs has become a diverse vacation destination over the years, developing a particularly strong gay and lesbian following. On the outskirts of town, set on a bluff affording 30-mile views of the verdant countryside, you'll find this 150-acre women-owned resort whose activities include fishing in stocked ponds, horseback riding, hiking, and soaking in a large heated pool. Accommodations include suites and cabins, all with Jacuzzi tubs, and many units have fireplaces.
Sea Vue Motel, Yachats, Oregon
Coastal Oregon offers some of the most dramatic scenery in the West, from emerald-green forests to dramatic cliffs overlooking the ocean. In the scenic, low-keyed town of Yachats - about 90 miles west of Eugene - you'll find this attractive motel, many of whose rooms have fireplaces and kitchens. The views are astounding from this rustic, pleasant property with wood-paneled walls and creatively decorated rooms. It's an ideal venue for getting away from it all - none of the rooms have TVs or phones, but there is free Wi-Fi throughout the property.

IS THERE A TUESDAY NIGHTLIFE IN PHOENIX?

I recently challenged myself to find something fun to do on a Tuesday night. This came after a comment was made by an acquaintance that there was nothing to do on a Tuesday. Coincidentally, I was thinking the same thing at the time. I went to work, and started to research venues (of course, that are women-owned, women-run, or women-friendly). I was pleasantly surprised by what I found.

For instance, the following makes for a great GNO (Girls Night Out), or date night. I've listed the first three events by their range in price. All of them take place on Tuesday, November 10th: Bluewater Grill on Camelback Rd. in Phoenix, is offering "East Coast vs. West Coast Oyster and Wine Tasting". What a concept! Now, I don't claim to be a fan of oysters. However, I always love to try something new. For $24.95 a person, you get to "sample five farm-raised oysters served on the half shell during a competition that battles the East vs. the West. In addition, enjoy a wine tasting featuring Savignon Blanc and Sancerre. 6:30 p.m. Reservations required". Okay, not bad! I'd be willing to try raw oysters.....for the first time.....

Next, Roys in Phoenix and Chandler is offering "A Champagne and Sushi Dinner". Now, this is more up my alley. But, what kind of champagne? I hate that cheap stuff that gives you a headache after the first sip. You ladies know what I'm talkin' about! Known for their three-course meals, this "three-course sushi dinner is paired with various Moët champagnes. Along with sushi, patrons dine on Waygu beef and dessert. Each course is served with either Moët Impérial, Moët Rosé Impérial, Moët Nectar Impérial and Moët Grand Vintage 2000. 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. $75 per person. Reservations required".

Finally, the "Cigar Dinner Series", which runs through January 2010, is in it's 14th season. This series takes place in Scottsdale at Remington's Restaurant and Lounge. $120 per person "this event features five courses of American and international cuisine along with wine and cigar pairings for each course. Wine and cigar connoisseurs will lead educational and informational discussions". I can't stand the smell of smoke, but I love the concept. The fact that women are increasingly choosing cigars over cigarettes to smoke, makes it an interesting choice. It seems a little pricey, but when you mix cigars with wine and discussions; well, let's just say, it goes with the teritory.

The above would be my Diva picks for a Tuesday night Diva Destination. Browsing azcentral.com, and looking at my own invites on Facebook, I did find other alternatives. Like Tuesday Night Bingo at The Lodge in Scottsdale. How about Silver Tuesdays at Silver Martini & Wine Bar, Phoenix? Silver has gotten mixed reviews, so buyer beware. My favorite would be PHX Tuesdays at PHX Night Club, Phx. 9 p.m. - 2 a.m. with free cover before 11 p.m. then $5-$10 after. Sounds like fun when I'm wanting to get my groove on.

Keep in mind, I have not visited and can not endorse any of the venues and/or restaurants that I've mentioned. I am excited to say though, that now I have something to do on a Tuesday night besides going to the same old, tired networking event/mixer where you see the same people week after week.

So ladies if you see me out and about, be sure to stop and say hello. Tell me what you think about the places I've mentioned. Tell me what you like to do on a Tuesday night. You never know. You may be on to something. After all, we are ALL Divas! Now, THAT's Divalicious!
